The Frilli Gallery opened in 1860 and was originally conceived as a workshop for creating “Art Nouveau” alabaster statues, some of which are still part of the current collection. Subsequently, the Gallery has specialised in the reproduction of famous sculptures from all historical periods: from Greek and Roman art to the Middle Ages and Renaissance, up to the modern period. The firm, founded by Antonio Frilli, was later run by the Marinelli family, owner of the Romito foundry of the same name. The premises where the gallery is housed were probably where the building’s carriages were parked. The Frilli firm has carried out works of considerable importance and prestige including the copy of the Gates of Paradise of the Florence Baptistery, the bronze balustrade of the spiral staircase, and the copy of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, as well as the copy of the door of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
