History

Since 1988

The Hotel Brunelleschi is the result of the merger of three hotels from the late 19th century: the Massimo D’Azeglio, Stella d’Italia, and Il Giglio. In 1988, the hotel’s new identity took shape, and during renovations, the walls of the medieval church of S. Michele in Palchetto and the cylindrical Torre della Pagliazza were uncovered. The Torre della Pagliazza is one of the most unusual and ancient buildings in the city, with its foundations resting on the remains of a Roman calidarium, which give it its circular shape. The tower dates back to the Byzantine era and, during the Middle Ages, served as a women’s prison, which is reflected in the name “Pagliazza,” meaning “straw bed.”
