History
Since 2005
The palace was built in 1714, replacing some modest buildings that had been present for some time on Via della Forca. The project was designed by architect Pier Paolo Giovannozzi as the residence of Count Bernabò Malaspina, a descendant of the ancient feudal family of the lords of Lunigiana. In the early 19th century, it was purchased by the De’ Conti family, whose coat of arms, depicting a palm tree on three mountains at the center of the shield, is displayed on the two main facades.
The fame of the De’ Conti family and the “monumentality” of the appearance of their residence led the authors of 19th-century works on prestigious Florentine palaces to list the palace—previously known as Malaspina and later called De’ Conti—among the most important buildings in the city.
