Since 1956
The terms curandaio and curandaia were once synonymous with laundresses: they referred to those who took care of laundry, particularly the fabrics to be washed and bleached. Naturally, the profession of curandaio and curandaia was practiced near bodies of water such as rivers, streams, and canals. In Florence, outside Porta San Gallo, the area along the Mugnone River was ideal for the care of fabrics, especially because a canal fed by the waters of the Mugnone protected against sudden floods. Over time, the profession of laundress became predominantly female, and the name Curandaie and later Cure, passed from the people to the location.
Towards this area, at the foot of the hills of Fiesole and Camerata, Florentine families would head on spring holidays, passing by a small church dedicated to the Madonna della Tosse. There exists a small booklet titled Viaggio dei fiorentini alla Madonna della Tosse, as the walk was considered long and adventurous. In the 19th century, on the flat land of Le Cure, one of the first residential neighborhoods outside the city walls was established.
The Lavanderia La Serena was founded in 1956, and today it boasts three locations in Florence.
