History

Since 1420

In the early 1500s, Giovanni Bartolini Salimbeni had the so-called Palazzo degli “Sportici” built, probably by Baccio d’Agnolo, on the site obtained from the demolition of old buildings, of which only the 13th century Torre Monalda, incorporated into the new construction, was saved.
The Torrigiani family, owners of the palace since 1559, and then also of the adjacent Palazzo Altoviti, lived there for over two centuries, before renting it, in the first half of 1800, to the hoteliers who ran it under the name of Albergo Porta Rossa. Famous during Florence’s period as the Italian capital until the post-war period, in 1975 the hotel was taken over directly by the owners and, since 2010, the business has been run by the NH Hoteles company, which took care of the renovation, during which wonderful frescoes were brought to light. The furnishing of the rooms and common areas has been supplemented by modern-style furniture. In the entrance, you can admire the artistic stained-glass windows by Ulisse De Matteis made towards the end of the 1800s.
