History

Since 1926

In 1926, Martino Bongi, after a long period of work at the Florentine photography supply store of the Sbisà family, which had been in operation since the late 1800s, decided to open his own optical and photography business on Via Vacchereccia, near Piazza della Signoria. The Ottica Bongi business continued until 1944, when on the tragic night of August 3rd, in an attempt to block the access routes to Ponte Vecchio, the entire neighborhood was destroyed by German troops.

In 1952, the business resumed at its current location on Via Por Santa Maria, where it flourished under the passion of Fazio, Martino’s son. Fazio continued the tradition of offering high-quality photographic equipment, showcasing the best cameras of the time, including the German Rollei and Zeiss, Swedish Hasselblad, Italian brands like Ducati and Officine Galileo, a renowned Florentine name, and the famous Japanese brands Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Pentax.

The business, still run with the same passion as Martino’s by his granddaughter Elisabetta and great-grandson Arturo, remains a point of reference for photography enthusiasts from all over the world.
