History
Since 1962
Founded on May 23, 1962, by an American named John Francis “Jack” Correa, it was modeled after a series of establishments already present in the United States, called “Red Garter.” These venues originated in the late 19th century as saloons for gold seekers and merchants, with a red garter (the translation of “red garter”) as their distinguishing logo. Over the years, the establishment has gradually renovated and changed, particularly after the great Florence Flood of November 4, 1966, when the Arno River completely flooded the premises, causing significant damage. It has been renovated several times and expanded from its original size (it now also includes a restaurant) but still retains some original elements: the long bar at the entrance, the furnishings, and the room dedicated to live music and karaoke. Starting in the 1970s, banjo bands were joined by musical groups, and over time, karaoke and jam sessions were added. In 2001, thanks to an expansion of the space, the Red Garter Steakhouse was opened inside, a restaurant inspired by American diners.
