The historic literary café was founded in 1896, not far from the heart of the city. Its founder, Tullio Fontana, envisioned it as a place modeled after the famous Parisian cafés, a venue for meeting and discussion. Florence, a city of art and culture, quickly recognized Chalet Fontana’s noble vocation, establishing it as a landmark where people could stop for a coffee and engage in conversation. In the 1970s, the now beloved Chalet Fontana became one of the first piano bars in Florence. A favorite spot for figures like Vasco Pratolini, Sandro Pertini, and Leonardo Sciascia, it is said that while seated at its tables, the painter would amuse himself by composing his extraordinary drawings. Over the years, Chalet Fontana has expanded and become a unique and unmistakable place: a precious symbol of a hidden Florence, waiting to be discovered.
