History

Since 1934

The shop was opened in November 1934 by Pasquale Bonatti, the maternal grandfather of Stefano and Roberto Righi, the current managers. Pasquale drew on his experience in the wine industry, gained from years of working at various farms in Greve in Chianti. The wine was purchased in 50-liter demijohns or barrels and bottled directly in the shop on Via Gioberti. The table wine came from the Chianti countryside, while Marsala wine was shipped from Sicily (via train), and vermouth was sent from Turin, also in barrels. The barrels arrived at Via Gioberti on trucks of the time and were unloaded directly into the shop.

From childhood, Pasquale’s daughter, Sara, mother of Stefano and Roberto Righi, began working in the shop, which has always been a wine retail store (not a tavern).

An additional boost to the business came with the involvement of Mario Righi, father of Stefano and Roberto, in the shop’s management in 1959. Starting in the 1960s, while maintaining the traditional sale of bottled wine “produced in-house” — the traditional table wine — the shop also began selling bottled wines and liquors. After the disastrous flood of 1966 (when the water level on Via Gioberti surpassed the ceilings of the commercial establishments), the shop gradually became more focused on offering quality products, eventually discontinuing the in-house bottled wine in the early 1980s to expand the selection with national and international products.

In recent years, the shop has transitioned from a purely family-run structure to one that better meets current needs, with Stefano and Roberto Righi joined by Luca Tarchi and Selvaggio Denti, collaborators and passionate tasters.
