Piazza della Repubblica

History

Since 1733

The Swiss Gilli family’s “Bottega dei pani dolci”, which had been located on Via dei Calzaiuoli since 1733, moved to Piazza della Repubblica at the end of the 1800s, taking over its present location around the 1920s, when ownership was transferred to the Swiss Frizzoni family. This business, as well as the other historic cafés overlooking the square, experienced a period of intense literary and intellectual fervour, due to the regular presence of some of the most illustrious figures of the Florentine scene, including Giuseppe Prezzolini and his collaborators at “La Voce” and the restless Futurists. “Gilli” houses the official headquarters of the Donatello prize and was listed in 1988.
