Hotel Lucchesi

History

Since 1860

The Hotel Plaza Lucchesi opened its tourism business in 1860, on the Lungarno della Zecca Vecchia. The “Spedale del Ceppo” was already located in these premises in the 15th century. The first name of the hotel, “Pensione Lucchesi”, comes from the name of its founders, Demetrio and Emilia Lucchesi, who then left it to their son Ermenegildo to manage the facility. At the time, the building had only two floors but was already equipped with every “modern” comfort, a real luxury for those years: electric light, a lift, central heating, and a garage! The Pensione Lucchesi, together with very few other hotels, is also present in the city’s first telephone directory, dated 1884; its telephone number was 732. As recorded on a plaque still existing in the hotel, King Umberto I attended a fireworks competition on the hotel premises on 21 September 1890. This was also documented in a letter of thanks to the Pensione Lucchesi by the then Mayor Francesco Guicciardini.
