History

Since 1927

The dairy shop in Borgo Pinti dates back to 1921 when Giovanni Ugolini started the business before passing it on to his nephew Enrico Zurli in 1928. At the time, the shop sold milk, homemade butter, and served coffee, while also providing home milk delivery for wealthy families in the area. To preserve the milk, an icebox was used to store large blocks of ice. In the morning, the dairy served caffellatte with freshly baked bread, and at noon, the only hot dish available was fried eggs. In 1933, they began producing gelato using simple and natural ingredients. Zurli’s gelato quickly became famous throughout the city, thanks in part to the nearby residential area of Piazza d’Azeglio. In 1966, the young couple Enzo and Gigliola Paggetti took over the business, which had expanded to include a bar service, while maintaining the high quality of the gelato. Just months after the management change, they had to deal with the damage caused by the flood, but they quickly reopened and continued to run the shop for 36 years. Since 2002, the business has been carried on by Enzo and Gigliola’s son along with his cousin, giving the shop its current name, “I Cugini.” In December 2016, they renovated the premises and reopened in February 2017.
