History

Since 1956

Starting in 1956, Renato Becucci, a map engraver at IGM, began manually engraving names and initials on copper and iron plates for intaglio printing in his free time. Orders came from stores and print shops in Florence, and during this period, he met Marcello Pineider (the owner of the historic Pineider stationery shop in Florence). Their relationship grew into a partnership not only for work but also in promoting embossed printing. This marked the beginning of a period where “Ditta Becucci Renato” began to equip itself to meet the numerous engraving requests that Pineider commissioned. Becucci’s engravings, including those in burin, English cursive, filigree, and stick styles, became highly sought after, and he gained recognition for his mastery of these particular fonts. In 1980, Alessandro Rossetti joined Renato’s workshop, and the same year, Renato renamed his business, founding La Litorilievo, a fusion of lithography and relief printing. During this time, Renato transformed his font designs into actual typefaces, some of which were cursive and filigree styles intended for lithographic printing of wedding invitations, business cards, and stationery, which became identifiable by their new, distinctive strokes. In 1995, Renato stopped engraving, but thanks to Alessandro Rossetti, one of the last masters of this ancient and precious craft, the value of this centuries-old profession has been preserved.
