Since 1875
Founded in 1875 by Luigi Gonnelli, the Libreria Antiquaria Gonnelli became a meeting place for artists of the “macchiaioli” movement and literary people of the time. Masters such as Giorgio De Chirico, Primo Conti, and Ottone Rosai passed through the small room. In the past, the Gonnelli bookshop also managed the auction house business, which was relaunched in 2009 under the Gonnelli Casa d’Aste brand. Each year, 2-3 auctions are held specialising in books, manuscripts, prints, drawings, and paintings. During the Second World War, the bookshop on Via Ricasoli became a strategic place, frequented by resistance militants who, in order to communicate with each other, hid their messages inside the books. Now in its fourth generation, the bookshop has been managed by Marco Manetti since 2000. Marco is the grandson of Aldo and son of Maria Pia Gonnelli and is assisted by his helpful staff. In order to develop the business, the Libreria Antiquaria Gonnelli moved to Piazza D’Azeglio 13 in 2018.
