History
Since 1952
“Lo Scheggi” was founded in 1952 as a general grocery store, where you could buy everything, even candles and sawdust. The shop was and still is located at the beginning of Viale dei Mille, in front of the Artemio Franchi Stadium. Over the years, the old owner, Gino Scheggi, adapted to the changing times, transforming his grocery store into a “Panineria” (sandwich shop), the first true and only sandwich shop to open in Florence in the 1970s, enriching his sandwiches with various cold cuts and sauces. It became famous, especially among the Viola fans, who would flock every Sunday to watch Fiorentina play and, out of hunger and tradition, would stop to enjoy a filled schiacciatina (flatbread) “from Scheggi.”
In the 1990s, the health of the elderly owner began to decline, and he decided to sell the business. In 1992, “Lo Scheggi” was purchased by Franco Petraroli and Sergio Frezzolini, who revitalized the place with great enthusiasm and energy, not only through their charm but also by introducing culinary innovations, such as “stuzzichini” (small appetizers), crostini, first and second courses, and of course, the famous schiacciatine filled with a variety of flavors. Specialties of the house included “fagiolata” (bean stew), “svegliappetito” (a special filling), prosciutto crudo with mushroom sauce, roast meat with truffle sauce, and many others—all while maintaining respect for tradition.
In 2001, Sergio Frezzolini retired, and the business remained entirely in the hands of the Petraroli family, who still manage it today, always welcoming with great warmth and involvement the “Viola” fans and all the customers who have continued to frequent this historic and typical Florentine establishment for 67 years.
