Since 1929

In 1929, Serafino Vivoli founded a dairy on Via Isola delle Stinche, which soon became a pleasant meeting place where you could have coffee and buy whipped cream on Sundays. His brother Raffaello joined him and, in 1932, the Vivoli brothers decided to try their hand at making ice cream. Since refrigerators did not yet exist, winter ice from Saltino, a town in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, was stored until the summer in underground rooms and then transported overnight to the city. Raffaello’s son Piero continued the business with passion and enthusiasm. Much commitment contributed to the fame of the ice-cream parlour that, in the 60s and 70s, became a meeting point frequented by Florentines and foreigners. The American, English, French, and German tourist guides identified the ice-cream parlour as a place not to be missed when visiting the city. The ice-cream parlour continues its tasty production and the business has extended into confectionery with the opening of an artisan pastry workshop.
